Nitu Bajekal

Patient satisfaction is extremely important to me. I consider myself a highly committed doctor, always keeping the best interests of my patients at heart. I am a passionate and enthusiastic teacher and am very involved in the training of future doctors and surgeons.

As an experienced surgeon, with over twenty years of experience, I am able to advise and guide my patients in choosing treatment options that are specifically suited to them. I often apply a holistic approach and a range of treatment options are always considered in each case. Surgery is offered appropriately, following a thorough and open discussion with my patients.

Background »

My initial training as a medical student was in the prestigious medical school, Jipmer, Pondicherry in India. I then did my post graduate studies, with research in fetal medicine in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences between the years 1987 –1991. I came to the UK for higher training in 1992.

I am currently a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Barnet Hospital in North London, since 2001. This is a busy District General Hospital, catering to a varied and large population. My main gynaecological interest is Minimal Access Surgery (Keyhole Surgery) and Cervical Cancer screening.

I have a special interest in Ectopic Pregnancy, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and Recurrent Miscarrage. I am actively involved in high risk Obstetrics and am the Lead for HIV pregnancy and women with Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and Teenage pregnancies in Barnet Hospital.

In India

I have helped set up an RCOG recognised Part 2 MRCOG course in India (in Pune) in early 2005. This course now runs efficiently wiith organisers and consultants in India and I lecture on this course once a year. This has helped develop extremely useful links with busy hospitals, both in India and in the UK and may be an avenue where trainees can explore to widen their experience.

As an invited speaker, I lecture to gynaecologists in India every year on a variety of topics. I have operated in a live Laparoscopy Workshop in Pune in 2008. This was very well attended by many senior gynaecologists.

I also am an invited speaker with Conference Plus and have lectured to GPs all over the world on a number of gynaecological topics.

Teaching »

Over the last twenty years in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, I have developed and maintained a keen interest in Medical Education. I am passionate about teaching and extremely committed to training and education.

Between 2002 and 2008, I was the Royal College Tutor responsible for training junior doctors at my current hospital. In 2007 I was also appointed as the TRAINING PROGRAMME DIRECTOR for ST1/2 trainees in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, which has provided me with a fantastic opportunity to dedicate myself to the training & mentoring of junior doctors at a national level. In this role, I am involved in shortlisting and interviews to recruit doctors to a national training programme.

In 2007, I also organised and set up a Centralised Teaching programme for ST1/2 in North London(10 hospitals). It now provides high quality teaching & has proven so successful, that a centralised programme has been rolled out to all levels of trainees from 2009. I enjoy lecturing and do so regularly, not only to a medical audience, but also to the public. In addition I teach on several MRCOG revision courses and am an MBBS examiner.

In recent years Mrs Bajekal has become a MRCOG examiner and interviews at consultant appointments, She also lectures to General Practitioners (GPs) on a regular basis.
